12 reasons IRS ‘dark money’ efforts are failing

The numbers behind the IRS nonprofit breakdown


The Internal Revenue Service’s division that polices nonprofit groups is bleeding staff and money. Its workload, meanwhile, is skyrocketing as many of these nonprofits become evermore political and pump unprecedented amounts of “dark money” into federal elections.

These are a few of the many findings from a six-month-long Center for Public Integrity investigation into the IRS’ bedraggled exempt organizations division.
