Veterans wait for disability checks as VA struggles to reduce backlog

Introduction

U.S. Air Force veteran Damon Wood was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He filed a disability claim with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Reno, Nev., and has been waiting 20 months for his rating. Nevada claims processors and service officers are overworked and struggle to work through the backlog of claims for veterans like Wood.
