Center for Public Integrity announces a leadership transition

Introduction

The Center for Public Integrity announced today a leadership transition.  CEO Susan Smith Richardson will be leaving to become Deputy Editor of The Guardian-US. Susan will remain at Public Integrity until March 12, 2021 to assure a smooth transition. We congratulate her on her new position and wish her the greatest success. 

 “While we are obviously disappointed that Susan will be leaving us, we thank her for her extraordinary job in leading a transformation of our organization, which we have enthusiastically supported and which we will continue to build on,” said Jim Kiernan, Chair of the Board. “Susan has reorganized our investigative newsroom, hiring our new Editor-in-Chief, Matt DeRienzo, as well as a number of other leading journalists, and has focused our work on the critical issue of inequality, through our historical prisms of exposing abuses of power and betrayals of public trust.”    

“Susan also leaves Public Integrity in a more sustainable position through her restructuring of the organization and her strengthening of financial accountability,” Mr. Kiernan continued. “During her tenure, we also added five outstanding new Board members, who will help us continue to support leading investigative journalism in the coming years.”

A Search Committee has been appointed to recommend to the Board Susan’s successor. Public Integrity plans to retain a leading search firm for nonprofit executives to assist the Search Committee. 

Public Integrity is a leading nonprofit investigative news organization founded over 30 years ago. It is building on its historic mission to protect democracy and inspire change by exposing abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust through investigative reporting with a focus on inequality. Given the watershed events of 2020, the impact of inequality on our society and our democracy has become increasingly apparent.
