Introduction
Thousands took to the streets of Washington, D.C., and across the country more than a week ago to demand accountability for police responsible for the killing in Minneapolis of George Floyd. Protesters came back the next day and night, and the next, and the next, and the crowds grew larger, and were even joined yesterday by Republican U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, who declared that “Black Lives Matter.”
Center for Public Integrity CEO Susan Richardson has laid out the context for these protests — widening economic inequality, violent racism and police unaccountability, and a global pandemic that has disproportionately taken the lives of Black Americans.
In these photos taken by Center for Public Integrity journalists over the past week, you’ll see a snapshot of the people marching on our nation’s capital and their message about racism, inequality and police reform.
