How have U.S. oil imports changed since the 1980s?

Introduction

At its peak in 2005, the United States imported more than 5 billion barrels of oil a year — up more than two-fold since the 1980s. However, the recent trend has seen a decline in the total amount of oil that America imports, as shown in the chart above. The data comes from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
